BABY BLESSINGS AND WELCOMING CEREMONIES
A new life crossing its first threshold.
A small ceremony, a circle of the people who love this child most,
and a moment that says: we see you, we welcome you, we will help carry you.
What is a Baby Blessing?
A way to mark the moment, on your terms.
A baby blessing is a welcoming ceremony for a new child - sometimes called a naming ceremony, a baby dedication, or a baby welcoming. It's often chosen by families who want something with the warmth and structure of a baptism or christening, without the requirement of belonging to a particular church or following a specific religious tradition.
It can be entirely secular, deeply spiritual, or anywhere in between - built around your own beliefs, your family's traditions, or simply the values you hope to pass on to your child.
Typically held in the first year of a child's life, the ceremony usually includes a formal welcome, the naming of the child, a blessing spoken over them, and the chance for parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends to take part.
THE SHAPE OF THE CEREMONY
Every family's blessing looks a little different.
Naming
A formal moment of speaking your child's name aloud — and sharing why, if it honors someone.
Honoring family
Grandparents, siblings, godparents, or chosen guides can be acknowledged and invited into a role.
A symbolic element
A candle, a written blessing kept for later, a small keepsake ritual — something that makes it feel held.
Families who have experienced loss, complicated paths to parenthood, or blended family structures often find this ceremony becomes a meaningful way to acknowledge that fuller story.
Whatever you call it, it belongs here.
Naming ceremony. Baby dedication. Secular welcoming. Baby blessing.
Different families use different words for this same kind of moment - and all of them are exactly the kind of ceremony I love helping create.
If your family doesn't practice a specific faith, or your beliefs span more than one tradition,
that's not a complication.
It's simply where we begin.
